Band Chronicles: Bagpipes, Jubilees, and Post-COVID Rhapsodies
50 years of musical shenanigansIn 2020, they were all set to paint the town tartan for their 50th anniversary of making hearts soar and toes tap, unfortunately COVID had other plans.
But don't worry, LSPB can't be silenced that easily! Like the Lochaber mist clearing after a rainstorm, they weathered the COVID storm and they're back in action under the guidance of the ever-talented Margaret MacMaster, who's been leading the band since the days of dial-up internet (1999, in case you were wondering). How we roll...As a registered charity, they're the true underdogs of the music world and are entirely self-financed. While they rehearse in a school-based premises, they have no direct financial aid from the Highland Council. Instead, their gratitude goes out to the generosity and kindness of the public - strangers and locals alike - who support their regular High Street performances during the summer months. They also make themselves available for hire at functions, sharing their music with a broader audience.
Ready for the encore? Now, they're navigating the uncharted territory of post-COVID life, much like the rest of us.
Sure, COVID threw a curveball, but this isn't their first rodeo. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, they're rebuilding, and who knows where the future will take them? One thing's for sure, they're going to keep the bagpipes singing, drums rolling and good times flowing. |
In the Beginning, there Was Alec:Back in 1970, when flares were fashionable and disco was all the rage, a musical revolution was quietly brewing in Lochaber. Founded by the visionary Alec MacDonald, the Lochaber School Band started on a musical journey that has spanned five illustrious decades.
The Piping PioneerThen entered Pipe Major Evan macRae, the first piping instructor to be employed by Highland Council. He ventured into the Lochaber wilderness and he wasn't just teaching tunes; he was teaching the very essence of Lochaber's soul through the bagpipes. Music was officially in the air, and the Lochaber piping scene would never been the same.
The Music MakersThis Pipe Band is no ordinary ensemble; they're a musical academy in disguise. Their members are primarily students from Lochaber High School. It's not just about playing together; it's about nurturing the musical talents of Lochaber's future stars.
You'll find them turning local events into melodious extravaganzas throughout the year, and while it is good to perform together, they encourage their pupils to shine solo. Why? To inspire, motivate, and let them strut their musical stuff. By participating in this way, it develops independence while fostering growth and confidence. Bagpipes, Drums and BeyondThanks to some dedicated fundraising by members and supportive families, band members have had the opportunity to travel abroad and experience others cultures.
In 2014, they rocked the pre-parade in none other than DisneyLand Paris - talk about a once in a lifetime experience! And then, the crescendo – in 2018, they were gallivanting through Belgium and France, even serenading the Jardin du Luxembourg. Bagpipes and drums in the garden, because, why not? |
